How to manually release your garage door safely
Power out, opener dead or car trapped inside? Follow these steps to disengage the opener, lift the door by hand and reconnect it, without getting hurt.
Safety warning · read first
Do NOT lift the door by hand if a high-tension spring has snapped.
A loud bang, a visible gap in the spring above the door, or a door that suddenly feels like it weighs a ton all mean the spring is broken. The spring normally carries 150 to 400 lb of door weight. Without it, the door can crash down, crush fingers or fall on a person or car. Don’t pull the release on an open door, don’t run the opener, and don’t try to wind or remove the spring yourself.

Step by step
Disengaging your garage door opener in 7 steps
Works for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman and most other chain, belt and screw-drive openers. Takes about 5 minutes.
- 1
Check the spring before you touch anything
Look at the spring on the bar above the door. If you see a 2-inch gap in the coil, or you heard a loud bang, stop here and call us. A door with a broken spring can weigh 150 to 400 lb and is not safe to lift.

Find the red emergency release cord
It hangs from the trolley, the carriage that rides along the opener rail near the top of the door. Some openers use a red lever on the trolley instead of a cord.
The red handle hangs from the trolley on the opener rail, usually 5 to 6 ft off the floor. - 3
Make sure the door is fully closed, then unplug the opener
Only pull the release with the door all the way down. Unplug the opener so it can’t start unexpectedly if the power comes back on while your hands are on the door.
- 4
Pull the cord down and back toward the motor
Pull the handle straight down, then back toward the opener in one firm motion. You’ll hear a click as the trolley lets go of the belt or chain. The door is now in manual mode.
Pull down, then back toward the motor. The trolley unlatches from the drive with a click. - 5
Lift the door slowly by the bottom handle
Grip the handle or bottom panel, never the joints between panels, and lift smoothly. A balanced door feels light and stays put about halfway up. If it feels very heavy, drifts down or tilts, lower it gently and call us. Use a second person if you can.
- 6
Lock the door while the opener is disengaged
With the trolley released, the opener no longer holds the door shut. Close the door and slide the side lock bar into the track, or keep the door attended, until the power is back.
- 7
Re-engage the opener when power returns
Close the door by hand, pull the cord toward the door to reset the latch, plug the opener back in and press the remote. The trolley re-hooks itself as it travels along the rail.
Pull toward the door, then run the opener once. The trolley clicks back onto the belt or chain carrier.

FAQ
Manual release questions, answered
How do I open my garage door when the power is out?+
With the door fully closed, pull the red emergency release cord down and back toward the opener motor. That disconnects the trolley from the drive, so you can lift the door by hand. If the door feels heavy or you see a gap in the spring above the door, don’t lift it. Call a technician.
My car is trapped in the garage and the spring is broken. What do I do?+
Don’t try to lift the door yourself or with the opener. Without a working spring the full weight of the door comes down on your hands and the opener. Call (760) 330-2440. We dispatch 24/7 across the Coachella Valley, and in most cases we can replace the spring on the spot so you can get your car out the same visit.
Can I pull the emergency release with the door open?+
Avoid it. If a spring is weak or broken, an open door can slam shut as soon as the trolley lets go. If you must close an open door during an outage, have two adults hold the bottom of the door before pulling the cord, then lower it slowly.
How do I reconnect my garage door opener after using the manual release?+
Close the door, pull the release cord toward the door (or flip the lever back) to reset the latch, then run the opener with your remote or wall button. The trolley will catch the carrier and lock back on with a click.
Does my garage door opener need a battery backup?+
California law (SB 969) has required battery backup on newly installed residential garage door openers since July 1, 2019, so you can open the door during an outage. If your opener is older or the backup battery no longer holds a charge, we can replace the battery or install a new smart opener with backup built in.
