Overview

Garage Door Spring Repair in Palm Desert, CA

Springs do the heavy lifting on every garage door. A typical two-car steel door weighs 150 to 250 pounds, and insulated, wood or full-view glass doors can weigh far more. The springs counterbalance almost all of that weight so the opener and your hands only have to guide it. When a spring breaks, the door becomes dead weight. It may rise a few inches and stop, or it can drop hard when released.

Our licensed and insured technicians carry a wide inventory of torsion and extension springs on every truck, so most spring repairs are finished in one same-day visit. We weigh the door, match the spring to it, wind and balance it by hand, and test the whole system before we leave.

Homeowners from Palm Desert to Indio call us at all hours after hearing a loud bang in the garage. We answer 24/7 and back every spring we install with a written warranty.

Safety warning: never adjust springs yourself

If you heard a loud bang or see a gap in the spring coil, stop using the door. Don’t pull the emergency release while the door is open, because it can fall. Keep people and pets clear and call us.

01

Torsion spring replacement

Springs on the shaft above the door, matched to your door by wire gauge, length, inside diameter and wind direction, then wound to the correct number of turns.

02

Extension spring systems

Side-mounted extension springs replaced in matched pairs with new safety containment cables, pulleys and clips where needed.

03

High-cycle spring upgrades

Builder-grade springs are usually rated for about 10,000 cycles. We offer high-cycle springs rated for 20,000 cycles or more for busy households.

04

Conversion to torsion

Older extension spring doors can often be converted to a torsion system for smoother, quieter and better-contained lifting.

05

Balance and safety check

Every spring job includes cable, drum, bearing and roller inspection, opener force adjustment, and auto-reverse and photo-eye testing.

Why spring repair is not a DIY job

A wound torsion spring holds a lot of stored energy, enough to lift a few hundred pounds of door. Unwinding or winding one means inserting steel winding bars into the spring’s winding cone and turning it a quarter turn at a time against that tension. If a bar slips, or someone uses a screwdriver instead of a properly sized bar, the cone can spin freely and throw the bar with enough force to break bones or cause head injuries.

Extension springs carry their own risk. Without a containment cable running through the coils, a snapped extension spring can whip across the garage. Loosening the wrong set screw, or removing the bottom bracket with the cable still under tension, is how most DIY spring injuries happen. Big-box springs are also sold in generic sizes that rarely match the door exactly, which leaves it out of balance and wears out the opener.

How we size a replacement spring

A spring isn’t just a spring. We measure wire size (for example .225, .243 or .250), inside diameter (most residential springs are 1¾ or 2 inch), overall length, and whether the spring is left- or right-wound. We then check those figures against the door’s actual weight, height and drum size. Getting this right is what makes a door stay put halfway open instead of drifting up or down.

On two-spring doors, we replace both springs together. Springs installed at the same time wear at the same rate, so when one breaks the other is usually close behind. Replacing both keeps the lift even and saves you a second service call a few months later.

Desert heat and spring life

Coachella Valley garages regularly pass 115°F in summer, and that heat dries out spring lubrication fast. Dry coils rub against each other, build friction, and fatigue sooner. Fine desert dust sticks to old grease and makes the problem worse. Oil-tempered and powder-coated springs, along with a light coat of garage door lubricant at each tune-up, help springs reach their rated cycle life.

How it works

Our spring repair process

  1. 1

    Secure the door

We clamp the door in place, disconnect the opener, and confirm the remaining spring and cables are safe to work around.

  2. 2

    Measure and match

We record wire size, length, inside diameter and wind direction, and check the door weight to select the correct springs.

  3. 3

    Install and wind

Old springs are unwound with proper winding bars, then new springs are installed, wound to spec and the cables retensioned evenly.

  4. 4

    Balance and test

We balance the door, lubricate moving parts, set opener force and limits, and run auto-reverse and photo-eye safety tests.

FAQ

Spring Repair questions, answered

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?+

The usual signs are a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the torsion spring above the door, a door that rises only a few inches before stopping, loose or slack cables, or an opener that hums and strains. A door that feels extremely heavy when you lift it by hand is another strong sign.

Should both garage door springs be replaced at the same time?+

Yes, on doors with two springs. They were installed together and have done the same number of cycles, so the second spring is usually close to failing. Replacing both keeps the door balanced and avoids a second visit.

What is a high-cycle garage door spring?+

A high-cycle spring uses heavier wire and a longer body to spread out stress, giving it a rated life of roughly 20,000 cycles or more, compared with about 10,000 for typical builder-grade springs. If you use your garage door several times a day, a high-cycle spring can last many more years.

Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?+

It isn’t recommended. The opener isn’t designed to lift the full weight of the door and can be damaged, and lifting it by hand is a real injury risk. If a car is trapped, call us and we’ll get there quickly under our 30-minute rapid response guarantee.

How long does garage door spring repair take?+

Most torsion or extension spring replacements are finished in one visit, often in about an hour, including balancing and safety testing. Heavier custom or glass doors can take longer.

Why do garage door springs break more often in the desert?+

Springs fail from metal fatigue, and heat speeds that up by drying out lubrication and increasing friction between the coils. Regular lubrication and an annual tune-up help springs in the Coachella Valley reach their full rated life.
